It’s the holidays and after consuming plenty of food and beverage, and maybe not following a regular diet and exercise routine, a light and healthy breakfast may be just what you need.
It’s certainly what I’ve craved lately in the morning.
I’ve experimented with a lot of different smoothie recipes – new flavours, ingredients, and additions – by trying others’ favourites and creating my own. But I always come back to the one standard concoction I perfected years ago.
It’s naturally sweet with berries and banana, and packs a protein punch with chia seeds and Greek yogurt. Plus, it has lots of iron for good measure.

Banana berry smoothie recipe
- 1 ripe banana
- Handful fresh or frozen berries (I prefer a berry blend, but you can add whatever berries are on hand)
- ½ cup unsweetened almond milk (you can substitute this for water, juice or a different kind of milk)
- Handful frozen spinach
- 1 heaping tablespoon plain Greek yogurt
- Sprinkle chia seeds
- Sprinkle flax seeds
Add ingredients to blender and blend until fully mixed. Add more liquid if it’s too thick. Pour into glass and enjoy. Or, pour into bowl and add berries, seeds, banana slices, nuts and anything else you like!
