Five days of oatmeal: recipe ideas to fuel your mornings

Oatmeal seems to have had a resurgence as of late — it certainly has for me. And why shouldn’t it? The breakfast staple is inexpensive, healthy, hearty and versatile. 

Growing up, my Dad would make a big pot of oatmeal every morning as fuel for our busy school day ahead — he called it “funky porridge,” adding in any mix of pantry ingredients handy that day (apple cinnamon was a favourite). At the time, I spooned in brown sugar and poured a swig of milk, but these days a swirl of almond milk on top does the trick. But just like back then, a bowl of this delicious and nutritious classic keeps me full all morning long.

I use organic quick oats and add water to the bowl before microwaving for about two minutes, if I’m in a hurry. Otherwise, cooking it on the stovetop makes the creamiest oatmeal. I usually eyeball the portions, but 1/2 cup oats to 1 cup water (for one serving) is a good guide.

Here are 10 great versions to amp up your morning meal.

  1. Cinnamon-raisin

Let’s start with a tried-and-true favourite. A great everyday combo is this naturally sweet version with a sprinkle of cinnamon and some raisins thrown in.

2. PB&J oatmeal

Whip up a batch of Oh She Glows chia seed jam and throw a tablespoon atop your bowl ‘o oats alongside a drizzle of natural peanut butter and you’re set for whatever comes your way that day.

3. Peanut butter banana oatmeal

Let’s continue with the peanut butter theme, shall we? This classic sandwich combo also makes a great oatmeal flavour, packing a protein and potassium punch. I ate it with flax before a recent 5k race.

4. Apple crisp oatmeal

What’s better than dessert for breakfast – but healthy? This combination lives up to that. Chopped up apple with cinnamon and walnuts adds sweetness and crunch to fuel the day (or afternoon, or evening).

5. Berry chocolate oatmeal

In discussing delicious oatmeal combos, a post would not be complete without mention of chocolate. Or, in this case, coconut oil and pure cocoa blend to make a delicious drizzle atop warm oats, almond milk and fresh berries.
