When it comes to working out, some of us need a bit of a push.
While I’m regimented about hitting the gym/yoga studio/running paths five days a week, sometimes it takes a bit of extra effort getting myself out the door or to push myself through a tough workout.
Proper-fitting, comfortable and nice workout clothing helps – it’s great to have something you look forward to putting on pre-gym that will boost your mood and enhance the effectiveness of your training (it’s hard to run 5 kilometres in pants that won’t stay up).
I will say that thinking about what food I’m going to eat post-shower helps get me through a rigorous sweat sesh. “I cannot wait to dive into those chicken tacos” I tell myself mid-burpee, picturing the avocado and salsa poured over shredded chicken and black beans. Hey, whatever it takes, right?!
Lately, this encouraging self-talk has skewed to the sweet side, as I dream about something somewhat thirst-quenching, protein-packed and tasty.
If you haven’t already noticed, a fave combination of mine is chocolate-peanut butter-banana (or any variation thereof). I created a refined sugar-free milkshake-like protein smoothie to satisfy this craving, which is especially magical after a sweaty summertime activity.

Load it up with nuts or seeds of your choice on top, sliced banana or – my fave – a crushed healthy peanut butter cup from this recipe.
Now get out there and crush a PB – before drinking some!
Recipe: Loaded Choco-PB-Banana Protein Smoothie
Makes one serving
- One ripe banana
- ½ cup unsweetened almond milk
- 4 cubes ice
- 2 tbsp natural peanut butter
- 1 tbsp pure cocoa powder
- 1 scoop protein powder of choice
- Sprinkle of cinnamon
Add all ingredients in blender and process on high until smooth. Pour into glass/jar and top with chopped peanut butter cup (recipe here).
