Vanilla Chai Protein Smoothie

I can’t seem to get enough chai lately. In tea, oatmeal, pancakes, and now… smoothies!

There’s something about the combination of spices that’s so soothing, especially in the winter time. I’ve written about my tea habits before, and chai is definitely in the rotation for afternoon pick-me-ups.

But I’ve recently discovered a new way to enjoy this flavour: in smoothie form! Having something this delicious and nourishing to look forward to all workout long definitely helps push me through a gym session.

Naturally sweetened and caffeine-free (as well as vegan if you use plant-based protein powder), this recipe will make enough for two small servings (or one if you just conquered a good workout!)

It’s relatively sweet if you’re used to refined sugar-free foods, so feel free to reduce the number of dates (you can also swap for maple syrup, although I haven’t tried it). You can also customize the spice portions to your liking, adding more if you like it spicier.



  • 1 frozen ripe banana
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract
  • one scoop plain whey protein powder (or your preferred type)
  • 5 ice cubes
  • 3 pitted dates
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp cloves
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground ginger


Blend together until the ingredients are combined and the ice, banana and dates are smooth. Enjoy!
