Coconut Banana Almond Smoothie

Guys, can you tell I’m on a smoothie kick?! Had I thought ahead better, I would have made the latest FOUR recipes part of a smoothie series or something. But nevertheless, here’s another to add to your arsenal of blended goodness.

I’ve been making smoothies ever since I was a teenager. When I was working as a teen, I’d whip up this fruity and filling berry smoothie every morning and grab it before jumping on the bus to work. I made it up at the time with things from the fridge, and perfected it since then. I remember it fuelling me enough until mid-morning when I’d take an early lunch break.

While that tried-and-true classic of mine is still in the rotation, these days I tend to experiment with all sorts of different ingredients, textures and combinations. The end result, though, has to be tasty and just the right thickness and creamy consistency – regardless of what goes into it! As much as I love my veggies, I will never drink a smoothie that tastes like actual kale or spinach.

Luckily, those flavours are super easy to mask when blending them with things like cinnamon, almond milk, nut butters and banana.

This smoothie has all five of those ingredients along with the delicious and healthy fat of coconut milk and the muscle-building powers of whey (or your favourite protein powder). To make it vegan, use a plant-based powder or leave it out altogether.

I’m all about customizations, so if this is too sweet for you, reduce or remove the dates from the mix. I found four small, pitted ones to be just right. I drank this as my dessert the other night after a light dinner – it definitely gives you the sweet fix without the ensuing blood sugar boost or guilt!


Coconut banana almond smoothie


  • ½ cup coconut milk (shaken)
  • ½ cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2 tbsp almond butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 pitted dates
  • Sprinkle of ground cinnamon
  • 1 ½ cups ice


  • Add all ingredients in a blender on high speed
  • Blend until smooth and serve immediately (with shredded coconut and cinnamon on top if you’re feeling extra fancy!) Note: also works well as a smoothie bowl; add nuts, seeds and fruit on top.
