Fitting in with Canada’s fittest city
A and I spent a few days in British Columbia’s beautiful Okanagan region last week and had the chance to experience some of the best amenities and activities the waterfront town has to offer.
While he visited some of the area’s best golf courses, I made the most of my mornings on vacation to check out all the sites and stores that cater to a wellness woman like myself! And as you likely guessed, there are a lot.
Here’s a round-up of some of the enjoyable healthy activities and eats I indulged in.
Hike Knox Mountain Park
Get up early and lace up your runners for a hike up Mount Knox, located just a short jog north of downtown Kelowna. Enjoy the steep Apex Trail to get your endorphins flowing for varying lengths of trips with spectacular views of the city from its many peaks and resting points.
Have Brunch at The Bohemian
Follow-up your workout with a healthy brunch at the popular Bohemian Cafe situated in the heart of the city on Bernard Street. With eclectic décor, a sun room and good-sized patio out front, it’s the perfect place to refuel, take in your surroundings, and plan for the rest of your day.
I had a spinach omelette with house-made organic white-whole wheat bread, but would opt for the hashbrowns next time that seemed to accompany every other diner’s dishes!
Sip Soothing Flavours at ChaiBaba Tea
Next, stroll along Ellis Street for 10 minutes until you get to ChaiBaba; a tiny tea shop featuring loose leaf teas of all varieties and flavours. Fighting a cold, I drank a cup of the Inspiration tea on my first day, and enjoyed an unsweetened chai latte with homemade almond milk the next.
Hit the Pool and Spa at The Delta
After a busy morning out, relax at the centrally located Delta Grand Okanagan Resort to soak in the sun on its expansive pool deck overlooking Okanagan Lake, or sip some wine in the hot tub in the evening.
Find Your Zen
Whether you settle in to some self-guided meditation at the top of Mount Knox or sign up for a class at one of the city’s many yoga studios, wellness and mindfulness practices are not uncommon in Kelowna. In fact, I felt very at home in my athleisure wear even walking along Bernard St. to do some shopping. Try checking out Moksha Yoga or the Ekahi Center for Yoga and Mindfulness.
Run/Walk the Waterfront
You can’t visit Kelowna without seeing its beautiful sun-lit boardwalk that sits behind the Delta and houses a marina at one end and features swirling paths toward a beach and bird sanctuary at another. At any time of day, you’re bound to pass runners, cyclists, folks going for a stroll on their lunch break or families snapping pictures on vacation. With the mountains hovering in the distance set against the lake and breezy willow trees, it’s a must-visit that doesn’t disappoint.

It wouldn’t be an Okanagan visit without a trip to at least one of the region’s plentiful and successful wineries. Check out Summerhill Winery‘s organic and biodynamic wines (especially its Alive Organic White) and Sandhill downtown, which makes single-vineyard wines.
Despite the weather being cool and wetter than usual, we enjoyed a wonderful trip and can’t wait to go back in the heart of orchard season. Have you ever been to Kelowna? If so, what are your favourite things to see and do?
